Deal Hudson, former editor & publisher of Crisis magazine and eminent Catholic intellectual, has a well-reasoned evisceration of Doug Kmiec on his site. Mr. Kmiec is the current “Catholic poster boy” for the Obama campaign (you may have seen the piece in last week’s Time Magazine about Kmiec).
Having been around many probama Catholics, the only reason (other than blind Democratic loyalty) that I can ever discern for their position is the war in Iraq. But, as Hudson points out, “There is no official Catholic position for or against the Iraq War.” Catholics can have varying opinions about the war in good conscience. But on other issues, there IS a clear Catholic position that reflects the best thinking about natural and divine law. On these issues, Obama FAILS to stand in accord with a well-formed conscience.
As I’ve explained so many other times, Obama is wrong on abortion, promising to sign the Freedom of Choice Act should he win the presidency. Obama’s pro-abortion stance alone creates a clear reason why he is an unacceptable candidate for president. Add to this his stance on the protection of marriage, and you have a man who seems bent on destroying the basic building blocks of society. How can that possibly be a message of hope?
Catholics who claim that they are looking “at the total picture” when they consider Obama need to stop deluding themselves - they need to stop ignoring the clear truth about Barack Obama: he’s pro-abortion and anti-marriage.
